Art

Please find below more information regarding Art at Orchard Grove Primary School

Art at our school is taught as a vibrant, hands-on journey where every pupil is encouraged to explore, experiment, and express themselves. Our curriculum is carefully sequenced so that children build their artistic knowledge and skills year by year, developing increasing confidence as they discover their own creative voice.

The curriculum is structured around progressive units that revisit key concepts — such as colour, line, form, texture, pattern, and composition — at increasing levels of depth. Younger pupils begin with simple mark-making, basic colour mixing, and early observational skills. As they move through the school, they encounter more complex techniques, refine their control, and learn to apply artistic vocabulary with growing accuracy and independence.

Each unit begins with studying artists and craftspeople from a range of cultures and time periods. Early on, children learn to notice simple features in artwork; later, they explore artistic intention, compare styles, and understand how art reflects ideas, identity, and history. This progression helps pupils develop a broad, culturally rich understanding of visual art.

Pupils then move into appraising artwork. Younger children describe what they see using foundational vocabulary, while older pupils analyse composition, technique, and meaning. Over time, they become reflective, articulate communicators who can discuss art thoughtfully and confidently.

Next, children experiment with imitating an artist’s style. At first, this involves exploring shapes, patterns, and textures; later, pupils practise more advanced techniques, experiment with materials, and take creative risks. This stage supports progression in resilience, independence, and technical skill.

Finally, pupils apply their learning by exploring techniques and practising skills in the area of study. As they move through the curriculum, they work with a widening range of media — drawing, painting, collage, printmaking, sculpture, textiles, clay, and digital tools. Each year builds on the last, helping children develop greater precision, creativity, and confidence.

Throughout the year, pupils’ artwork is displayed proudly around the school — in classrooms, corridors, shared spaces, and communal galleries. These displays celebrate progression, showing how skills develop from early experimentation to increasingly sophisticated and expressive pieces. They also help children see the value of their ideas, take pride in their achievements, and feel part of a thriving creative community.

Across the school, this thoughtfully sequenced curriculum nurtures imagination, perseverance, and pride. By the end of each phase, pupils can clearly see how their skills have grown — and their artwork on display becomes a joyful record of their artistic journey.
